Schwab is industrializing the personalized client relationship. Robinhood is building the infrastructure that captures the client regardless of whether they want an advisor or not. Both moves are further along than most advisors realize, and the distinction between what was announced and what is actually being built matters for how you respond.
What Schwab Actually Said
In May 2026, Schwab CEO Rick Wurster committed publicly, at the firm’s investor day, to using AI to deliver personalized portfolio commentary, market context, and research to clients who hold less than $1 million at the firm.¹ Currently, only clients who meet that threshold qualify for a dedicated relationship manager. The vast majority of Schwab’s 39 million active brokerage accounts fall below it.
What Schwab launched on May 5 is a generative AI product that combines portfolio performance insights, relevant market news, and Schwab analyst commentary. That is the personalized explanation of what is happening in a portfolio and why. Relationship managers deliver that explanation to top-tier clients today. Schwab intends to deliver it at scale to clients who currently receive generic content because dedicated service is too expensive to provide.
That is the starting point, not the destination. Schwab stated explicitly at investor day that it plans to ship new capabilities with each subsequent release, expanding from portfolio insights into topics like concentration risk, asset allocation, and technical indicators throughout 2026.² The relevant question is not whether Schwab is competing with advisors today. It is what Schwab is building toward, and how fast.
What is still not in the roadmap: financial planning, automated trading, tax loss harvesting, or wash sale protection. The functions that require judgment, integrate across institutions, and demand a full picture of a household’s financial life still require an advisor. For now.
What Robinhood Is Actually Building
Robinhood’s agentic trading capability launched on May 27, 2026.³ This is not an announcement. It is live. By the end of Q2 2026, nearly 100,000 customers had opened Agentic Trading accounts, with over $100 million deployed through AI-powered agents in the first two months.⁴ That adoption pace is not a pilot. It is a product finding its market.
Users open a dedicated trading account, fund it with a specific amount, and connect an external AI agent to execute equity trades on their behalf within that ring-fenced account. Every trade triggers a push notification. Users can disconnect the agent instantly. The account is isolated from the rest of the user’s portfolio. Support for options, crypto, and event contracts is on the roadmap.
The dual-track strategy is the more consequential development, and it extended further at the SYNERGY26 conference in June 2026. The Robinhood Advisor Network is now live in limited rollout, connecting Robinhood customers who want professional guidance directly to RIAs on the TradePMR platform through an in-app referral marketplace.⁵ Robinhood targets customers with roughly $250,000 in assets for the referral flow, guides them through a questionnaire, matches them with vetted fiduciaries, and builds the onboarding experience directly inside the Robinhood app. The client who came to Robinhood at 24 to learn how to invest stays in the Robinhood ecosystem when she decides at 38 that she wants an advisor.
Robinhood Cortex goes further still. It is rolling out to retail Gold subscribers as a personalized investing assistant, and it is embedded directly into TradePMR’s Fusion platform as an advisor tool generating portfolio summaries, tax insights, meeting preparation, and follow-up tasks, at no additional cost to TradePMR advisors.⁵ The same AI layer serving retail clients is serving the advisors those clients get referred to. Robinhood is not just building a client referral pipeline. It is building the infrastructure that both populations run on. That is a different kind of platform capture than anything a direct-to-consumer announcement describes.
The Client These Platforms Are Building For
Neither Schwab nor Robinhood is building for the clients most advisory firms serve today. A $500 million RIA serving clients with $1 million or more in investable assets faces no immediate direct competitive threat from either announcement.
The indirect threat is generational, and it is more consequential than the direct one.
HENRYs, High Earners Not Rich Yet, are arriving at Robinhood and Schwab in their twenties and thirties. They are building portfolios on AI-native platforms, learning investment discipline inside those environments, and developing platform loyalty years before they accumulate enough assets to cross an advisory firm’s minimum.
The 35-year-old who inherits $750,000 and has been self-directing through Robinhood for ten years faces a decision: continue with the platform she already trusts, or seek out an advisor she has never met. The platform that holds her transaction history, that she has used through three market cycles, has a structural advantage that no marketing campaign can overcome. Your firm competes with that advantage whether you acknowledge it or not.
Where the Human Advisor Value Proposition Actually Holds
The competition is not between advisors and AI. It is between what an advisor actually delivers and what a platform delivers. Those are not the same thing, and the distinction matters more than most advisors are willing to examine honestly.
The positions that are genuinely defensible: the advisor present at a consequential life event, the medical diagnosis, the business sale, the inheritance itself. The behavioral intervention that prevents a bad decision during a market correction, delivered by someone who knows the household, not a push notification. The integrated view across custodians, tax situations, estate structures, and family dynamics that no single-platform tool can assemble without the full picture a trusted advisor already holds.
These are real advantages. They are not what most client-facing technology is designed to deliver. The advisor who uses AI to stay present between meetings, timely, personalized, responsive, is doing something Robinhood’s interface cannot do. The advisor who treats the existing relationship as a reason not to invest in the quality of client communication is not competing with Robinhood. They are losing to it slowly.
The Decision That Precedes the Technology Decision
The advisors who will feel Schwab and Robinhood most acutely are not the ones competing for the clients those platforms are building for today. They are the advisors who have not built relationships with the next generation of their current clients before those clients inherit.
The platform a 25-year-old uses to learn how to invest is the platform she will consult when she needs to decide what to do with an inheritance. Advisors who want to be part of that decision have to be part of the relationship before the inheritance arrives. Technology can support that work. It cannot substitute for the decision to do it.
